Bad Day

All things considered, today was a sucky day. I couldn’t muster up my usual exuberance during a lecture the second half of the day. Then there was the phone message first thing in the morning at work telling me the job I interveiwed for down in Stillwater Prison was given to someone else. No amount of positive self-talk can really take away the hurt of being passed over for a job. Rejection sucks, period.

Another Lying Meme

There’s a picture going around the internet claiming that the United States is 3rd in the world for homicides. Once again Snopes.com is our friend:

(Snopes.com) Statistics compiled by the World Bank for the most recent year available (2012) placed the United States well down the list, behind dozens of other countries, in the rate of intentional homicides. Likewise, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s (UNDOC) study on intentional homicides places the United States as 110th on a list of countries ranked (from highest to lowest) by intentional homicide rate. If we considered only the absolute number of murders (and not the murder rate), the United States would rank somewhat high among all the countries in the world, but the U.S. would still only be eighth (not third) on that list, and using an absolute number for this form of comparison is a very poor metric. (The United States is the world’s third-largest country in terms of population, so all other factors being equal, one would expect the U.S. to have the third-highest number of murders for that reason alone.)

Broadly, the ten countries with the highest murder rates in the world are Honduras, Venezuela, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Swaziland, Saint Kitts and Nevis, South Africa, and Colombia, while the United States doesn’t crack the top hundred.

But, but, but……. it’s on the internet, it fits my world view, so it must be true! It’s just gots to be true.

Bleach Sales Are Going Up

It seems that there have been several statues of Donald Trump naked, with no balls, and a small penis going up in several states. As a result many blogs and web sites have pictures of said statue. I can see why bleach sales have gone up. I saw the pictures. I’m going to go buy myself a bottle to clean out my eyes right after finishing this post.

No, I won’t post the pictures. I want my readers – what few there are – to be able to continue to read my blog.

However, I will post this:

Trump-Statement1

Rimshot!

I wonder if this will start a sub-genre of election erection humor.

They Really Do Eat There Own

Earlier today, Nancy wrote: Trump’s hiring of [Stephen] Bannon and [Kellyanne] Conway isn’t just a signal to Republicans – it sends a message to all of us who have been watching this one closely. We’re not going to see anything new from Donald Trump. What we’ve been seeing is what we’ll continue to get. I…

via Trump Going Full Breitbart is Bad News for the GOP — Washington Monthly

From all I read, and I did read it all, the plan is for Trump to continue to attack the Republican establishment in Washington while also attempting to go to the left of Clinton on loss of jobs to overseas and immigration.

Two Notes

On a down note – I didn’t get the job I interview for last Friday.

On an up note – I ordered my college book for my first class coming up in September.
